To counter the common impression that the medieval period was simply Europe’s “Dark Ages”.

Islamic World: Quran – Bhagdad/House of Wisdom – Avicenna – One Thousand and One Nights

China: Tang poetry – Li Bai and Du Fu

Japan: The Pillow Book – The Tale of Genji

Persia: Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh – Omar Khayyam – Rumi

Europe: Beowulf – Song of Roland – courtly literature

The Tale of Genji appears around 1010, Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh in 1010, and later Rumi’s Masnavi around 1270. Great literature flourished simultaneously from Europe to Japan.
